Watch and Pray

And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray. Mark 14:32.

The evening of His Passion, Jesus made a special request of His chosen that confers unto all who are devoted to serving the Lord.

And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. Mark 14:34.

A watchman is someone who takes on the burden of intercession; the lonely occupation away from the spotlight and near to the Father’s heart. Every saint must take on a measure of this responsibility to be an over comer.

Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. Mark 14:38.

The watchman often become a voice to the people, as the Lord speaks with the voice of His intercessors.

Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. Ezekiel 3:17.

The watchmen of Jerusalem are a type for the saint who carries a burden for the “heavenly Mount Zion.”

For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burns. Isaiah 62:1.

Now the basis for the title of this blog is revealed:

I have set watchmen
Upon thy walls, O Jerusalem,
They shall never hold their peace
Day nor night:
‘Ye that are the LORD’S remembrancers,
Take ye no rest,
Isaiah 62:6
7And give Him no rest,
Till He establish,
And till He make Jerusalem
A praise in the earth.’
JPS Tanach 1917
Peterson in The Message Bible translates 62:6:
I’ve posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem.
Day and night they keep at it, praying, calling out,
    reminding God to remember.
This is the interplay of Memorial and Remembrance, the topical focus of this blog.
And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch. Mark 13:37.

  1. Jerusalem will remembered and exalted. It is already the spiritual center of the world for three major religions. We must always pray for Jerusalem and Israel
